Zurich is the largest city in Switzerland and the capital of the canton of Z?rich. It is located in north-central Switzerland at the northwestern tip of Lake Z?rich. The municipality has approximately 400,028 inhabitants, the urban agglomeration 1.315 million, and the Zurich metropolitan area 1.83 million. Z?rich is a hub for railways, roads, and air traffic. Both Z?rich Airport and railway station are the largest and busiest in the country.
Permanently settled for around 2000 years, Z?rich has a history that goes back to its founding by the Romans, who, in 15 BC, called it Turicum. However, early settlements have been found dating back more than 6400 years ago. During the Middle Ages, Z?rich gained the independent and privileged status of imperial immediacy and, in 1519, became a primary centre of the Protestant Reformation in Europe under the leadership of Ulrich Zwingli.
he earliest known form of the city's name is Turicum, attested on a tombstone of the late 2nd century AD in the form STA(tio) TURICEN(sis) ("Turicum tax post"). Neither the name's linguistic origin (most likely Rhaetic or Celtic) nor its meaning can be determined with certainty. A possibility is derivation from *Tur?con, from the Gaulish personal name T?ros. The Latin stress on the long vowel of the Gaulish name, [tu?ri?kon], was lost in German [?tsy????] but is preserved in Italian Zurigo [dzu?ri??o] and in Romansh Turitg [tu?rit?].
A first development towards its later, Germanic form is attested as early as the 6th century with the form Ziurichi. From the 10th century onward, the name has more or less clearly been established as Zurich.
Zurich is sometimes referred to as "Downtown Switzerland" for publicity reasons

On May 24, 2016, Ambassador LeVine and her husband, Eric, traveled to Zurich to meet with members of the Zurich Cantonal Government and talk about the growth of Swiss start-ups. While there, they also met with the South Pole Group to learn more about how the private sector can help reduce carbon emissions.
Later, the Ambassador and Eric enjoyed a tour of the Museum Rietberg by its director, Dr. Albert Lutz. Dr. Lutz and his staff shared insights about various pieces in the Gardens of the World and Dada Africa exhibits. The Ambassador and her husband were particularly impressed by the use of mixed media throughout the museum.
By the spring of 1997, we bought a house together. Signing a mortgage felt like an immense commitment – something that truly bound us together. But neither of those milestones compared with the moment I woke up on September 8, 1997, the morning after our wedding. The world had changed, colors seemed brighter, sounds more harmonious, and emotions more intense. I never imagined that a simple exchange of vows and signing of legal documents would have such a profound effect. But they did.
I love Eric LeVine – my husband. And we, together, love our two wonderful children and our very sweet dog.
And basically since the beginning of the United States, U.S. law has made sure that we have the right to legally bind our love in marriage.
